Our origin story

Meet the founders

Salim

My childhood dream was to be a teacher. During school I became impassioned with science and went on to become a physics professor. The year I was up for tenure, I received an email from one of the students in my class. He was angry and distressed, having homicidal and suicidal thoughts. It was clearly a call for help. I found him the following day in the halls and he explained to me that his mother wanted him to become a pharmacist, but that he was a passionate musician with clear potential for success. He didn’t want to be in his science classes and it was being reflected in his grades. He felt like a failure and a disappointment.  

It was a wake up call for me. Young adults are under so much stress to live up to all the expectations that society has for them, often to the point of stifling their own desires. It changed the way I taught. I started to emphasize to my students that their worth and their potential for success in life was not defined by their grades, they were so much more than this. 

Eventually I left teaching and was driven by the idea of building a community of people that help each other succeed.  That’s when I met Cyrus.

When Salim and I met, he told me this story and we immediately understood each other because I saw myself in his distraught student. I had also been through a time in my life where I felt directionless. A time when I dropped out of school, flunked classes with zeros and had generally given up. I had wallowed in a world of escapism until my mother stopped getting angry at me for my poor performance. She stopped when she opened a disastrous report card and cried instead of yelling. She cried because she was so disappointed. She cried because she felt like she had failed as a parent. It was the most awful feeling I have ever felt.  

Shortly after, I picked up a psychology textbook that my sister was studying and could not put it down. I was fascinated. The concept that sparked my interest the most was the theory of internal and external locus of control.  I could see this concept at work in my own life.  I had blamed everyone and everything around me for my situation and never taken ownership for any of it myself.  So I decided to change my attitude. I started setting goals for myself and achieving them. I had never done anything like that before and it felt amazing! I was empowered to do more. I went back to school, started investing my money and building an online tutoring business.  That’s when I met Salim.  

The beginning

Our original plan was to build a ‘school of life’. An online community where people could come to share their skills, get help and support each other in achieving their goals. We aimed for one million followers in 6 months. It was a crazy goal. We failed many times on our way to achieving it, but setting goals like that forced us to be creative, push boundaries and not be confined by what we thought was ‘feasible’. Although the company focus has evolved over time, this type of goal setting has become a major part of the way we do things at Goalcast, it is in our DNA.

To do this, we follow ten guiding principles.  

Let us be clear. Our focus on these principles is not lip service. It is not a nice set of words created by our marketing team that looks good on the wall. We live these principles on a daily basis, in all the facets of our work.

This is hard. Changing the world is not easy and is not for everyone. It requires experience, vision, strength of character, vulnerability, a huge amount of passion and grit. We have extremely high expectations for ourselves and each other. We move fast and don’t follow the path most taken. If you’re looking for structure and stability, we aren’t for you.
